In summer 2017, the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, invited six young English language learners from Lewisham Southwark College to explore and respond to the symbolism, drama, and history illustrated in the Painted Hall. They are from countries all over the world: Eritrea; Gambia; the Dominican Republic; Egypt, Peru and Ecuador.
Southeast London-based artist, Michelle Butcher, who facilitated this project, enabled them to relate their stories and aspirations using different methods and styles of art.
Repositioning, reinterpreting – even repurposing – elements from the Painted Hall ceiling into new arrangements, these young people have each explored journey and dislocation in their work.
We will show this work at Festa during the summer holidays.
Viewing and drinks… Saturday 21st July from 6 p.m.
